Since 2015, the Chicago (IL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated has dedicated its efforts to improving mental health care through a program called Links2Hope: Closing the Mental Health Gap in the Black Community. Mental Health is a critical public health issue that significantly affects Black people, who tend to seek help at much lower rates compared to other ethnic and cultural groups. Research shows that approximately 18-20% of individuals in the United States experience a mental health crisis, with racial and ethnic minorities facing a 3% higher likelihood of such a crisis.
These challenges are further exacerbated by social and environmental factors such as structural and institutional racism, violence, and trauma. The double pandemic of 2020, which included the Coronavirus (COVID-19)and widespread racial injustices, highlighted critical health disparities and the lack of access to care. Many Black people do not seek treatment due to a lack of awareness of available resources and tools.
Making A Difference
The Chicago (IL) Chapter recognizes the significant challenges surrounding mental health and is dedicated to taking meaningful action. In response, we have created the Links2Hope Mental Health Resource Guide to foster mental health and wellness in our community. This guide is readily accessible online and through social media, ensuring that individuals can easily find the support they need when they need it. It highlights a variety of community organizations committed to this essential work throughout the greater Chicago area, providing valuable resources for those seeking assistance.
